Policy: Bruce Grey Owen Sound Resolution: Formula that increases the minimum wage

4/3/2019

Whereas this province has an increasing number of citizens earning less than a living wage while working 40 or more hours a week and
Whereas the rate of inflation constantly increases this number with a stagnant minimum wage and
Whereas this condition is harmful to local business who will have fewer and fewer people who can afford their products and services and
Whereas this condition also puts  taxpayers  deeper in debt due to the high cost of income assistance, healthcare, lost productivity, child/ spousal abuse, suicides, and crime and
Whereas the increase of the wages of lower income earners would greatly benefit local businesses due to the fact that people who earn less would spend all their money they earn just to provide the necessities of life for their families and that the money would be spent locally and
Whereas the business community needs the ability to plan their finances

Be it resolved that the Ontario NDP present a bill to parliament  and commit to upon assuming power implementing  a formula that increases the minimum wage by three times the annual  rate of inflation each year until it equals a living wage and then index it to the annual rate of inflation each year thereafter.

__________
Example based on approximate average of inflation over the last 10 years.
Minimum wage now $14.00/ hr.  -
Yearly  increase 6% = $0.84
Year 1 =1$4.84
Yearly increase = $0.89/
Year2 =$15.73
 Yearly increase = $0.94/
Year 3 = $16.67
Yearly increase = $1.00/
Year 4 = $17.67
Yearly increase = $1.06
Year 5 = $18.73
Yearly increase  = $1.12
Year 6 = $19.85
Yearly increase  = $1.19
Yearly increase 4% = $0.70/ yea
Year 7 = $21.04

4/3/2019

WHEREAS the Government of Ontario needs to consider all opportunities for significant cost savings; and
WHEREAS Ontario is the only province to fund public and separate school boards; and

WHEREAS annual cost savings in excess of $1 Billion per year could be achieved; and

WHEREAS Ontario provincial funding of religious schools of the Roman Catholic faith exclusively has led the United Nations Human Rights Committee to censure Canada for religious discrimination in 1999 and again in 2005; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the NDP urges the Government of Ontario to merge the English Public and Roman Catholic School Boards into one unified publicly funded English School Board; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the NDP urges the Government of Ontario to merge the French Public and French Roman Catholic School Boards into another unified publicly funded French school board.

Policy: Accessible Quality Home Care

4/1/2019

Whereas it is estimated that the number of Canadians living with dementia will increase 66% over the next 15 years; and

Whereas the number of seniors needing care in their homes will double in the next 30 years; and nearly 3 in 10 Canadians are caregivers; and

Whereas investment in non-profit organizations like the VON to provide health care services and community supports decrease health care costs; supports independence in the home and significantly reduces a person’s need for costly visits to Emergency Departments, admission and re-admission to hospital and admission to long term care facilities; and

Whereas the complexity of the work and acuity of care has increased and a significant wage disparity between community and hospital support workers exists; it has become more difficult to recruit home care providers; therefore

Be It Resolved that an Ontario NDP government would provide the necessary funding to ensure the effective and accessible availability of quality home care and will continue to advocate for government funding to meet person-centred in-home services in our communities.

Policy: Closing the Skills Gap

4/1/2019

Whereas
  1. there is a higher demand for skilled workers than is being provided through the current education system, and
  2. the Ontario skills gap currently costs our economy up to $24.3 billion in foregone GDP and $3.7 billion in provincial tax revenue lost annually, and
  3. there is currently a lack of financial incentives for people to pursue skills training;

Therefore be it resolved
  1. that targeted scholarships be funded by the provincial government for students entering an educational path in high demand occupations, and
  2. that the provincial government allocate new revenues to post-secondary institutions for  experiential learning apprentices, such as apprentices and co-ops for on the job training.

It should be noted that this resolution was adopted by the Windsor – Tecumseh Constituency Association.
