Paul Johnstone
CHANGE THAT PUTS THE PEOPLE OF BRUCE-GREY OWEN SOUND FIRST!
Paul Johnstone of Owen Sound has been chosen by the NDP riding association of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound to represent the New Democratic Party in the upcoming fall election.
“With the Conservatives nominating someone from outside the riding, the NDP is the alternative to the Liberals this time around, not only in this riding but across Ontario,” said Johnstone.
Johnstone, president of Ontario Public Service Employees Local 224, says the jail closures are a top issue. But other issues include the imposition of private wind farms on this region without public input.
“The Liberals have failed to consult on the wind farms, or give any local municipality a say in this private power scheme,” he said. Similarly, they failed to consult or do any cost analyses when they decided to close our jails and move 100 well-paid jobs and $6 million in income out of this region.”
“I am pleased the NDP have committed to restore these jobs by building a regional correctional facility in Grey and Bruce, where it is so badly needed, and keeping the older jails open until then.”
Noting the NDP came second federally not only in Grey-Bruce Owen Sound, but across the Lake Huron-Georgian Bay region, he said the party has the wind in its sails.
“Tim Hudak wants to bring us back to the days of Mike Harris, which simply means cutting more jobs and services in our communities; we tried that route and it leads nowhere. The Liberals have ignored this region repeatedly –on jails, on wind farms, and on many other issues. Only the NDP is listening to the needs of the people of this region.”
